I was going to hold off on posting this a bit till I got some other pictures from Costa Rica up, but what heck, I'll just do it now.
This is a Magnificent Hummingbird, and while it isn't quite as magnificent in this shot as it can be ([link]
), I think it actually works better for the overall color scheme as it is.
These birds are among the most common species in Costa Rica, particularly in the upper altitudes where this individual was photographed. I had had to lie with my back at about a 45 degree angle against a wet hill for around 90 minutes before this guy was comfortable enough to come back to his perch. And just to complicate matters, it was starting to get dark too, so the pressure was on.
Thankfully, hummingbirds are creatures of habit, and they tend to revisit the same places over and over, so it was only a matter of time.
